The Shuswap

The Shuswap

The Shuswap, noted for its recreational lakeshore communities including the city of Salmon Arm. The name “Shuswap” is derived from the Shuswap or Secwepemc First Nations people, the most northern of the Interior Salish peoples, whose territory includes the Shuswap.  Shuswap Lake consists of four arms, forming a shape reminiscent of the letter H. The four arms are called Salmon Arm (southwest), Anstey Arm (northeast), Seymour Arm (north), and the main lake (west).  Shuswap Lake connects to Little Shuswap Lake via the Little River, which flows from the end of the west arm.  You can stroll through alpine meadows, walk with your family through rolling trails, or step towards an inviting café. It’s where you can jump into incredibly warm water from the deck of a houseboat. Its a place where you can golf, then bike, then swim, then dine on fine local fare, and take in an evening out on the town. Its a place where you can taste great wines and tour vineyards or explore hidden natural treasures.  This 6 minute video shows you all of that as you travel the Trans Canada Highway from Chase to Sicamous.

Herald Park & Margaret Falls

Herald Park & Margaret Falls

Just 14 kilometres from the Trans Canada Highway along the western shore of the Salmon Arm of Shuswap Lake, Herald Provincial Park is a great spot to use as a base camp for visiting the many attractions of the Shuswap area. The park covers 79 hectares of beautiful beach and forested uplands, and boasts a 119-site campground, boat launch and large day-use area. While in the area a must see is the self-guided nature walk to Margaret Falls. The trail leading to Margaret Falls passes through a rock chasm that feels like an enchanted forest. The unique and sensitive ecosystem of flowers, trees and shrubs are part of the park’s natural heritage. The water from Reinecker Creek cascades down a sheer rock face creating a natural shower. If you look carefully you may be able to see the hidden cave in the rock directly behind the falls.
